This rustic residence in Hunter Valley is one of my recently completed interior design projects, and is the home of wine maker Richard Harkham of Harkham Wine.
Having worked with Richard on previous projects , including his Bondi house a few years back, it was such a great opportunity to create a warm, rustic and inviting country home on the property, as he divides his time between Sydney and Hunter Valley.
The existing house was remodelled internally to create a large, open plan living and dining space - with a feature stone fireplace as centre piece. As Richard often entertain one of the main requirements of the renovation was to ensure plenty of space for guests and large groups to get together. With 4 bedrooms and two bathrooms - this home now has generous proportions, and the living space flows out onto a large outside patio - perfect for private wine tastings and entertaining.
The colour scheme was developed to translate from cold, winter evenings to hot, summer days. With a fresh white and grey base palette, natural textures such as recycled timber, stone, sisal rugs and tan leather brings warmth and perfectly reference the surrounding country vistas.
New wide width, smoked and stained oak floors was installed and walls painted a crisp white. The large windows with views of the rolling hills outside were lined with soft grey linen curtains. Handmade white subway tiles give texture to the white kitchen and bathrooms, as black tap ware and accessories provide a modern edge.
The existing furniture was replaced with generous, solid pieces made from recycled timber and leather - to provide Richard with the perfect place to return to from a day on the property making wine and running the cellar door and adjacent accommodation.
